SUMMERSVILLE — State Treasurer Larry Pack was in Cabell, Nicholas, and Clay counties this week to present more than $12,000 in unclaimed property funds to the Milton Volunteer Fire Department, Young Life Wild Ridge Camp, the City of Summersville, and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

“Whenever we can return such a large sum of money back to our communities, including local organizations, city governments, and law enforcement agencies, it is a good day. We hope these dollars help serve the people of West Virginia,” Treasurer Pack said. “My Office continues to return money to rightful owners at the fastest pace in state history. We have more than $500 million that belongs to the people and businesses of the Mountain State, so I encourage everyone to check our online database to see if some of that money belongs to you or your family.”

On Tuesday, April 7, Treasurer Pack presented the Milton Volunteer Fire Department with a $10,900.16 unclaimed property check which came from a stale dated check and miscellaneous tangible property.

“It really came at the right time. For the last couple years, we’ve been applying for grants to get new rescue airbags, but kept getting denied,” Jonathan Black, captain and treasurer of the Milton Volunteer Fire Department. “We appreciate the Treasurer’s Office for reaching us to us about these kinds of things otherwise we wouldn’t have found that funding.”

On Wednesday, April 8, Treasurer Pack toured the Young Life Wild Ridge Camp in Summersville and then presented an unclaimed property check, valued at $1,455.25, to Young Life Camp Manager Mark Braun. The money came from credit balances.

“This check means the continued partnership of not just the local area but the state of West Virginia for Young Life and being able to continue to see the ultimate fulfillment of the vision of Wild Ridge come into fruition,” Braun said. “I think there’s equipment we can utilize (this money) for and the ability just to invite folks out to see Wild Ridge and what it’s going to be.”

Treasurer Pack then met with Summersville Mayor David Harper and presented the City of Summersville with a check worth $2,232.26, which came from credit balances and miscellaneous payments.

“This will go into the General Fund and then we’ll go ahead and pass it off to the water and sewer department. I’m sure they have all kinds of needs out there,” Mayor Harper said. “I’m hoping that other municipalities will inquire about it. You never know. A check may be delivered to you too.”

On Wednesday afternoon, Treasurer Pack presented the Clay County Sheriff’s Office with a check valued at $7,453.44 from their participation in the Office’s online firearms auction held in February. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office sold 53 firearms during that auction.

“We plan to use the money to buy new patrol rifles for the department. The ones we currently have are outdated and older,” Chief Deputy Ryan Thomas said. “The Office was a huge help from beginning to end throughout the whole process.”

Treasurer Pack recently announced the winning bid amount from the February online firearms auction was $82,299.10 placed from a federal firearm licensed dealer in Georgia. There were 527 firearms sold from 19 law enforcement agencies across West Virginia that were up for bid. More than 18 bids were submitted from licensed dealers spanning across ten states. More information about State Treasurer’s Office’s firearms auctions is available at www.wvtreasury.gov/FFL-Auction.

The Treasurer’s Office has more than $524 million worth of unclaimed property listings in its database.

Since the start of Fiscal Year 2026, which began on July 1, 2025, the Treasurer’s Office has returned more than $27.3 million to rightful owners.
