William Eugene ‘Bill’ Coberly

William Eugene “Bill” Coberly, 76, a lifelong resident of Elkins, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023, in the West Virginia Caring Hospice Center in Elkins following an extended illness. He was surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Oct. 4, 1946, a son of the late Archie J. and Leona M. Dean Coberly.

On Jan. 19, 1968, he was married to Kathy Pomp in Elkins.

He later married Nancy Williams in Keyser, West Virginia.

He is survived by two daughters, Natasha Pingley and husband, Todd, and their children, Cody Pingley and Chase Pingley of Coalton, West Virginia, and Sara Coberly and son, Kaleb Corder, of Belington, West Virginia.

Also surviving are two brothers, Benjamin Coberly and Donald Coberly and wife, Robin, all of Elkins; six sisters, Geraldine Alice Simmons and husband, Fred, Freda Mae Coberly Louk, Carol Elizabeth Hedrick and husband, Arthur, Phoebe Ann Ramsey and husband, Robert, Charlotte Leona Scott and husband, Edward, and Irene Frances Shreve and husband, Richard, all of Elkins.

He will be mourned by a large number of nieces and nephews and a countless number of other relatives and friends.

Also preceding him in death were five brothers and one sister.

Bill served his country in the Army National Guard, retiring with 24 years of service. He was a hard worker and a strong man having worked as a meat cutter, the railroad and later as a coalminer from where he retired. Bill was especially proud of his grandsons, watching them race dirt bikes and play sports. He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, riding his Harley Davidson with friends and had a love of antique cars. He was a member of the Mountain State Street Machines and attended numerous car shows with his El Camino. Most of all, he loved his family and spending time with them. He never met a stranger and was well loved by all who knew him.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, 2023, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, from the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Harold Swecker officiating.

Interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman where full military honors will be accorded by members of the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program, HW Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131 in memory of Bill. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangement for William E. Coberly.
