Arthur Paul ‘Corkey’ Sublett Jr.

Arthur Paul “Corkey” Sublett Jr., 79, a resident of Philippi, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023 at his residence.

Corkey was born Sept. 5, 1943, in Mingo County, a son of the late Arthur Paul Sublett Sr. and Helen “Marie” (Dotson) Sublett.

Corkey was united in marriage on March 14, 1964, to the late Marian B. (Mitchell) Sublett. She preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 2023.

Surviving are children, James Shon Sublett and wife, Nyoka, and Eric Scott Sublett and wife, Denise, all of Philippi; grandchildren, Shaina Sublett, Kelci (Sam) Beeson, Gavin and Devin Sublett, Sawyer and Elliott Sublett, and Brittany (Julian) Jones; and great-grandchildren, Brylee, Lainey, Aurora, Yana and Austin.

Also surviving are siblings, Sam (Carol) Sublett of Shelton, Washington, Mike (Peggy) Sublett of Keensburg, Colorado, and Paula (Tom) Hedge of Durango, Colorado; nieces and nephews, Colter, Rory Sarah of Shelton, Washington, Maggie and Michael of Keensburg, Colorado, and Matt and Jason of Durango, Colorado; brother-in-law, Rodney Mitchell and wife, Linda, of Philippi, and niece, Amanda and Ryan Sisson of Philippi.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Roberta “Bobbie Jo” Sublett; and nephew, Travis Sublett.

Corkey served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1963. He was in the airborne division and had completed over 50 jumps. Corkey was the third employee hired at Kitt Energy, where Leer South is currently located. He worked at that location for 38 years, but retired from Whitetail Coal Mine in Preston County after a 42-year-long mining career. He was a long-time member of the Barbour County Club, Pleasure Valley Hunting Club and VFW. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, riding his side by side, watching his grandchildren play sports and hanging out beside a campfire. Members of the Pleasure Valley Hunting Club who played a large influence in Corkey’s life include Bernie and DJ Corley and family, Edward Jones and fiance, Karla Thrasher, Brian Tucker, Mike Delauder, Brian Cox and brother Frankie, Ryan and Amanda Sisson and family, Kent and Kristi Freeman and son, David, John and Tammy Austin and Greg Tucker. They all took part in making sure his last few years hunting on the mountain were successful and fun!

Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory, 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi, on Thursday, Aug. 17, from 4-8 p.m. and on Friday. Aug. 18, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon, with pastor Bryan Headley officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery with full military honors being accorded.
