Norma Gail Holbert Harris

Mrs. Norma Gail Holbert Harris, 85, a former resident of Belington and more recently of the Mountain Memories Assisted Living and Retirement Facility in Elkins, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 16, 2023, in the care facility. Death was following a period of declining health.
She was born on May 27, 1938, at Belington, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Hubert Harold “Bucky” and Florence Moore Holbert.
On Sept. 23, 1955, she was united in marriage to Herman Guy Harris, who preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 2016.
She is survived by one son, Edwin Guy Harris of Gillette, Wyoming; one daughter, Debra Gail Hutchinson of Belington, West Virginia; two brothers, Edwin Holbert and wife, Linda, of Belington, and Homer Lee Holbert and wife, Sherri, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; two sisters, Roberta Kittle and husband, Jerry, of Belington, and Linda Moats and husband, Kenny, of Philippi. Additional survivors include three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Audrey Holbert.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Michael Lynn Harris; two brothers, Harold Holbert and Ronald Holbert; a daughter-in-law, Janet Harris; and a son-in-law, Randy Hutchinson.
Norma Gail was a 1956 graduate of the Belington High School and received her Bachelor’s degree in Education and Library Science from Davis & Elkins College. Later in life, Norma Gail pursued her Master’s degree from West Virginia University, majoring in Education Administration. She had formerly worked in the Barbour County School System, teaching in the Belington Elementary, where she also had the job as librarian. She then was employed at Belington Middle School, where she was the school’s principal, from which she retired.
Norma was very active outside of her career, she was a member of the VFW Laurel Mountain Post 410 Ladies Auxiliary, she was a former state director of the VFW youth camp. She served as a cub scout den mother and served as the ladies bowling league president in Elkins.
She formerly attended the Bethel Baptist Church, while living in Cocoa, Florida, and attended the Faith Deliverance Church in Belington.
She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Her request for cremation will be honored. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023, in the National Cemetery at Pruntytown with the Pastor David Canny officiating. The interment of her cremains will follow.
