Ronald Wayne Jones

He was born Oct. 1, 1932, at Coalton, West Virginia, a son of the late Earl F. Jones and Thelma M. Lipscomb Jones.

On Dec. 23, 1959, at Elkins, West Virginia, he was married to the former Sandra Kay Daugherty, who preceded him in death May 29, 2010. They had celebrated 50 years of marriage.

Surviving are one daughter, Dianne Kay Volitis and husband, Frank, of Elkins; and three grandchildren, Mollie A. Jones, Claire E. Jones and Evan W. Jones.

He is the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by one son, Martin Wayne Jones; one brother, Frank V. Jones; and three sisters, Imagean Jones, Kate Jones Mantz and Phyllis Jones Hinkle.

He was a graduate of Coalton High School with the class of 1951, and then enlisted in the United States Navy in June of 1951. Served four years during the Korean Conflict, and stationed in Guam, where he served Patrol Aircraft, going to and returning from Korea. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1956, and served in the Honor Guard in Washington, D.C., Arlington Cemetery at Ft. Myers, Virginia, and was a member of the Army Drill Team.

He served three years in Germany, 1961-1964, in the 15th Infantry 3rd Division, two tours of duty in Vietnam and received several awards, including The Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star. He was Drill Sergeant for 10 years and Instructor at Drill Sergeant School at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He retired as Infantry 1st Sergeant in July of 1974, after 22 years. He was head of maintenance at Davis & Elkins College and a counselor at the Mountain School. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, jogging and was very much into fitness and wellbeing.

Mr. Jones’s request for cremation will be honored.
