Gene ‘Buck’ Cook

Gene “Buck” Cook, 92, a resident of Glenmore Community, Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life Tuesday afternoon, July 23, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Mountain Hospice. He had been in declining health since December.
He was born Thursday, Jan. 14, 1932, at Wymer, West Virginia, a son of the late James Cook and Vernie Tingler Cook. He was married to the former Loraine Ketterman, who preceded him in death July 28, 1998.
Also surviving are two sons, Scottie Lynn Cook and wife, Tammy, of Glenmore, and David Eugene “Dave” Cook and wife, Cindy, of Harman; one daughter, Deborah Sue Wilfong of Elkins; seven grandchildren, Eliza Grimes, Jarrett Cook, Candy Knotts, Dustin Cook, Betsy Wilfong, Kelly Vandevander and Wendy Hamrick; nine great-grandchildren, Ariella Grimes, Beckham Grimes, Collette Knotts, Clayson Knotts, Raylee Cook, Thomas Cook, Bella Vandevander, Hailey Collins and Gage Huffman; one great-great-grandson, Cyrus Collins; and two brothers, Howard Cook, of Shadyside, Ohio, and Jerry Cook of Ukraine.
Preceding him in death are one son-in-law, Dale Wilfong; eight brothers, Roy, George, Emmett, Ernest, Jack, Paul, Joe and James “Felix” Cook; three sisters, Ina Mae Cook, Hazel Lambert and Edna Fleming; one grandson, Aaron Wilfong; one great-grandson, Noah Vandevander; and one great-granddaughter, Cassia Collins.
He attended the schools of Randolph County, was a Christian by faith and was a logger all of his life, having worked for the family-owned logging company, Cook Logging. “Buck” retired in 2023 at the age of 91.
He was always cutting wood, enjoyed riding his side by side, and running the log loader. He loved his family tremendously and it truly was an honor to know “Buck.”
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, July 26, 2024. Final Rites will be conducted from the funeral home, Friday, at 1 p.m.
The Rev. Paul Thompson will officiate and interment will follow at the Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Country Club Road, Elkins, West Virginia.
