Melvin Richard Phillips, Sr., 89, a resident of Parsons and Oakland Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Oakland, Maryland, passed from this life Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at the nursing home.
Melvin was born Saturday, April 6, 1935, a son of the late Walter Lewis Phillips and Beulah Virginia Knicley Phillips.
On June 2, 1960, at Red House, Maryland, he married Shirley Ann Puffenbarger Phillips, who survives. They had celebrated 64 years of marriage.
Left to cherish Melvin’s memory is his wife, Shirley and three children, Melvin Richard Phillips Jr., Virginia Ann “Jenny” Phillips of Clarksburg and Cheri Lynne Phillips of Parsons.
Preceding Melvin in death besides his parents was a sister, Marie Black; and two brothers, Junior Phillips and Randal Phillips.
Melvin was the last surviving member of his family.
Melvin attended the schools of Tucker County. He held various jobs over the years, helped to build a railroad in Idaho, helped with road construction on I-79, was a welder for Quail Ridge Construction and Kingsford Manufacturing Company, and retired as a self-employed tree trimmer.
Melvin attended the Rosendorf Pentecostal Church of God and the St. George Church of God. He enjoyed hunting and cutting wood.
He loved reading his Bible, going to church, and would always kneel and pray before cutting a tree.
Visitation will be held at the Hostetler Funeral Home on Saturday, July 27, 2024, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour.
Rev. Adam Snyder will officiate, and interment will follow in Bethel Cemetery in Holly Meadows.
