Mabel Dorothy Vanscoy Phares, 97, a resident of Nella’s at Autumn Lake Health Care and formerly of Harrison Avenue, Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 8, 2024, at Nella’s at Autumn Lake Health Care at Elkins, West Virginia.

Mrs. Phares was born Thursday, March 10, 1927, at Kerens, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Leslie Vanscoy and Winnie Sell Vanscoy.

On Aug. 12, 1948, she was married to Stanley V. Phares, who preceded her in death on Nov. 1, 1997.

Surviving are two nieces, Carolyn Canfield and husband, Ward, and Lois Arbogast and husband, Harold; and two nephews, Floyd Morrison and wife, Jean, and Kenneth Morrison.

Mrs. Phares was preceded in death by one sister, Maxine Vanscoy Morrison.

Mrs. Phares was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1945. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree of Arts in Business at Davis & Elkins College with the Class of 1949.

Mrs. Phares was employed by Davis & Elkins College, where she was once selected as Outstanding Secretary of the Year. She retired after 27 years of service in 1988.

Mrs. Phares was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Elkins, where she taught Sunday School and served on the Board for several years. The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Friday, Oct. 11, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Final Rites will be conducted from the funeral home Friday at 1 p.m.

Pastor Tim Edin will officiate and interment will follow at the Israel Cemetery at Kerens, West Virginia.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241.
