Vaccination event organizers praised

I got my first COVID-19 vaccination shot recently at the Phil Gainer Community Center. You should run a special article on this excellent operation, maybe even a special section so that you can put lots of pictures of the people working there. Whoever organized this did a bang-up job. However, whoever organized (if anyone did) the telephone signup for the vaccination did an abysmal job. Even a small amount of thought could improve it. Kenneth Sheller Elkins

Help needed with free meals program

On March 12 years ago, several churches met and made the decision to serve a free meal each Saturday. Meals would be served at Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church, 113 First Street, Elkins. The name Common Ground was chosen. Each church serving would bring their own supplies and use Woodford’s kitchen. At one time there were 14 churches participating. Recently we have had five churches that had to quit serving for a while due to COVID. At present all meals are take-out, either a hot or cold lunch. It would be a great help if a church or organization that has not served ...

Who can end this pandemic?

You know, and are probably getting very tired of, the necessary measures used to limit the spread of COVID-19: mask wearing; hand washing; physical distancing measures, which include routinely keeping a distance of at least 6 feet; quarantining if you’ve been exposed and isolating when sick. Everyone’s lives have been disrupted by COVID-19, many lives have been taken from us, and you are wondering when this will ever end. Our experience in addressing this pandemic has taught us many important lessons. One is that each of these control measures is only as successful as the degree to ...

Driving safely around big trucks

Big trucks are a lot less scary when you understand them. The PSC’s Transportation Enforcement Officers patrol the state’s highways and the turnpike to ensure that commercial motor vehicles, such as semis and buses, are in compliance with safety regulations. But that is only part of the solution. The other part is for private motorists to not cause dangerous situations when sharing the road with larger vehicles. There are several key elements to keep in mind. Truck drivers have huge blind spots and semis need more time and space for every maneuver. They absolutely cannot stop ...

Reader: Patriotic parallel precarious

We readers can understand that an attempt to bring our community together was made in the article, dated Jan. 16, 2021, on the front page of the Inter-Mountain, titled, “Local Attorney Sees Modern Parallel to Historic Battle.” This attempt, however well-meaning, really falls flat for anyone with a conscience because George Triplett implies that we are out for revenge against Trump. This idea is false. We are out for justice to be served after an American president incited Americans to attack Americans on Jan. 6, 2021, based on the Big Lie that the election was stolen from him. ...

Vaccination clinic staff praised

My husband and I attended the COVID vaccine inoculation for ages 70+ on Wednesday, Jan. 13. The process was flawless. The persons taking care of us were friendly. Hats off to them and to the Randolph-Elkins Health Department. We’re fortunate to live in our Elkins community. Vickie Shaffer Monterville
