Newly elected sheriff is congratulated

In the election for sheriff of Randolph County, the people have spoken. Congratulations to Rob Elbon. Rob will be the new supreme law enforcement officer, defender of the West Virginia Constitution, and maintainer of the rule of law. I also express a sincere appreciation for the people who supported my campaign. To the newly elected sheriff and those who will comprise the West Virginia Legislature and take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of West Virginia, please remember the following: West Virginia Constitution - Article 1 Section 3 The provisions of the ...

Working to battle pancreatic cancer

Now that the election is over, I know all of us are getting to or have gotten to the point of COVID fatigue. I know I have. Like everyone else, I wish things would go back to “normal.” However, through all of this, people are still dying of all types of cancer. In October each year, we are surrounded by pink and pink ribbons for Breast Cancer Awareness, even in 2020. The pink ribbon has brought about increased awareness for breast cancer and early screening. However, there is no early screening for pancreatic cancer. November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and the color is ...

Group should look at Wimer Field

With the “Elkins Make It Shine” initiative, the city needs to look at Wimer Field. Elkins Make It Shine is a great (and) obviously successful program giving our city a clean presentation and much needed facelift. Wimer stadium is the exact opposite. On Oct. 6, 2018, the MSFF hosted a band field show at Wimer Field for 22 plus marching bands and showman from across the state and beyond. Many negative comments were made about the state of the facility, including repeated plans not to return next year. The facilities are a huge embarrassment. The field is barely sustainable, making ...

True value of an honest businessman

I have heard so many people use an explanation for voting for Donald Trump: he is better for business. Indeed, Vice President Pence remarked during the recent vice presidential debates that President Trump is a businessman. OK. I get that business owners might indeed be glad that a businessman is the leader of the free world. I personally think diplomacy is a more important requirement. But what about being an honest businessman? Is that not also a requirement? I do not think leadership in this country calls for a businessman who lies, cheats and steals. All of which ...

Manchin surprises former delegate

During my 34 years in the West Virginia House of Delegates, I had the honor to serve with many state legislators, including Joe Manchin. During those years in the 1980s and 1990s, he seemed to operate in a non-partisan fashion generally representing the conservative values of our state. It is most disappointing to see him now aligning with the far left that has become the new Democrat party with his possible vote against Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. According to our U.S. Constitution, we elect the president for a four-year term, not a 3-1/2 year term. This is ...

Reader: Voters need the facts, not fiction

In response to Doris Kelley’s Oct. 10 letter, I offer this. In the words of Vice President Pence, “You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.” I’ll make this short and sweet. I repeat, Trump did NOT say our soldiers are losers. When Trump said, “I don’t like people who have been caught” he was referring to McCain being caught in a pack of lies. Your referral to Trump’s military deferment is as ridiculous as the rest of your mindless rant. In regard to postal workers dumping ballots, you’re wrong. There were a lot more than three. If you’d watch ...
