Morgantown, Bridgeport post wins

ELKINS — Morgantown Post 2 and Bridgeport Post 68 posted wins Friday on the first day of the Junior American Legion state tourney being held at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

Post 2 eliminated host Elkins Post 29, 21-1, in Friday’s late game, while Post 68 cruised to a 15-2 victory over Kingwood Post 56 in six innings in the first contest.

Morgantown erupted for 10 runs in each of the first two innings.

Tommy Montague and Anton Crudup each knocked in four runs, Nate Wolfe had three RBIs and Jordan Smolkin a pair of RBIs for Post 2.

Eli Boggs earned the win on the mound, going all five innings, allowing four hits and fanning 10.

Caleb McCauley, the final of four pitchers used by Elkins, struck out seven in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

McCauley also had a double and scored Post 29’s lone run in the fifth inning.Jacob Wamsley doubled in the first inning.

Jack Gould, meanwhile, led the Bridgeport offensive attack against Kingwood, going 4 for 5 and driving in a pair of runs.

Sam Goodwin was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Brody Pierce 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs and Tyler Veltri knocked in two runs.

Grant Lively went the first 1 2/3 innings to garner the win, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out three and walking two.

Tanner Mayfield finished in relief. He gave up three hits, fanned three and didn’t issue a walk.

Jackson Turner was tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs on three hits and striking out three in 3 1/3 innings of action.

Turner also had a pair of hits at the plate. Conner Osborne and Wyatt Moyer accounted for Post 56’s RBIs.

Today’s schedule in the single-elimination tournament will be Bridgeport vs. Grafton Post 12 at 1 p.m. and Morgantown vs. Potomac Valley Post 64 at 4 p.m.

The winners of those two games will then square off at 7 p.m. in the first game of a best-of-three championship series.

Game 2 is set for 1 p.m. Sunday. A second title game will follow at 4 p.m., if necessary.
