Tigers hold off Pendleton, fall to Lincoln

ELKINS –Elkins split a pair of games Saturday at Robin Harvey Memorial Field, falling to Big 10 Conference foe Lincoln in the lidlifter, then claiming a win over Pendleton County.

Trent Stone knocked in three runs in the victory over the Wildcats.

The Tigers broke a 1-1 tie by plating three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to build a 6-1 lead.

Pendleton County answered with three runs of its own in the fifth, but Elkins responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the frame to make it 9-4.

The Wildcats threatened again in the seventh using RBI singles from Caleb Armentrout and Chase Owens, and a bases-loaded walk to Harper to cut the deficit to 9-7.

Dyer Barger then struck out the final batter with the bases loaded to end the game.

Brody Sites gave Pendleton County a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first.

Stone’s run-producing single in the bottom of the inning drew Elkins even.

Drew Hinzman had a two-run double and Stone an RBI double in the third to give the Tigers a 4-1 cushion.

Elkins tacked on two more runs in the fourth when Stone drew a bases-loaded walk and Owen Stanley lofted an RBI single to center.

A wild pitch, Cooper Smith’s run-producing single and Will Smith’s RBI walk accounted for Pendleton County’s runs in the fifth.

Brayden Biller earned the win in 4 2/3 innings of work, allowing four runs on five hits and fanning two.

Cole Harper took the loss.

Isaac Shepler worked one inning of relief for Elkins, striking out two and not allowing a hit or run.

Barger struck out four, giving up three runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings.

In Saturday’s first game, Lincoln took advantage of five Tiger errors in picking up a 7-2 win.

Elkins trailed 1-0 before drawing even in the fourth when Barger singled in Braden Cooper, who had reached on a one-out double.

But the Cougars scored six runs over the final three innings — taking advantage of three Tiger miscues.

Jakob Shiflett’s RBI single in the sixth plated Cooper for the Tigers’ final run.

Cooper and Biller each had two hits in the loss.

Caleb McCauley was tagged with the loss, going four innings and allowing four runs on four hits and striking out two.

Stanley worked 2 1/3 innings of relief and Trent Stone went 2/3 of an inning for Elkins.

Jacob Bart earned the win. He scattered one run on two hits in 3 1/3 innings, fanning two.

Bart and Colton Edwards had two hits each for Lincoln, while Max Abruzzino cracked a double.

The Tigers (2-8) are slated to host Preston at 6 p.m. today.
