ELKINS — Elkins High’s potent running attack was on full display again Friday night in the home opener at Tiger Stadium.
Logan Beam, Jaden Hatfield and Seth Robinson combined for over 400 yards rushing and five touchdowns as the Tigers cruised to a 45-6 win over Moorefield in the first-ever meeting between the schools on the gridiron.
Hatfield led the way with 158 yards on the ground, finding the end zone three times, while Beam rumbled for 164 yards and one score and Robinson added 92 yards and 29-yard TD run late in the first half as Elkins took a 24-0 lead at the break.
An 82-yard run by Beam led to the Tigers’ first score of the night, with Hatfield closing the deal with a 2-yard plunge.
The Yellow Jackets threatened on their ensuing drive, marching deep inside EHS territory.
But a failed fake field goal gave the Tigers back the ball and led to a 22-yard field goal by Dyer Barger, who was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra-point conversions.
Elkins then tallied 14 points inside of 1:42 left in the second quarter, the first coming on a Beam 8-yard run after a Tiger interception and the second on Robinson’s scamper as the result on a partially-blocked punt.
Moorefield then took advantage of a EHS fumble to find the end zone, when Bill Lewis went in from 2-yards out to make it 24-6 after the failed two-point conversion and 7:33 left in the third quarter.
The Tigers then put together a game-sealing drive, using up nearly 8 minutes of the clock, with Hatfield scoring on a 5-yard run.
Hatfield added a 59-yard TD run and Caleb Robinson a 2-yard run for Elkins in the final quarter.
Cyrus Kump, filling in for injured starting quarterback Brock Linville, had 82 yards rushing for the Yellow Jackets.
Elkins (2-0) visits Lewis County next Friday for a Big 10 Conference matchup, while the Yellow Jackets entertain Hampshire on the same evening.
