Elkins High boys, girls advance in regional tourney

ELKINS — Third-seed Elkins earned a spot in the Class AAA, Region II semifinals with a 4-1 win over No. 6 Keyser Tuesday evening at Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers (13-3-3) will now travel to second-seed Robert C. Byrd on Saturday.
The teams battled to a 2-2 draw during the regular season.
Fourth-seed Hampshire, which defeated No. 5 Lewis County on Tuesday, ventures to top-seed Bridgeport in Saturday’s other semifinal.
The title game will be played Wednesday at the site of the highest-remaining seed, with the victor advancing to the state tournament to be held Nov. 5-8 in Beckley.
Tristan Whited turned in a hat trick for Elkins in Tuesday’s match.
The contest was tied 1-1 at the intermission.
Hayden Ferguson added a goal for the Tigers and Elliot Arbogast an assist.
Bobby Valentine was in net for Elkins in the victory.
The fourth-seeded EHS girls also earned a trip to the regional semifinals by garnering a win on penalty kicks over No. 5 Hampshire in Tuesday’s preliminary contest.
The match was tied at 1-1 before going to the shootout, with the Lady Tigers prevailing, 3-0, on PKs.
Elkins visits top-seed Bridgeport Saturday in the semifinals.
In the Class AA-A, Region II tournament, the eighth-seeded Philip Barbour boys defeated Lincoln, 2-0, on Monday and played at No. 1 Frankfort Wednesday in quarterfinal play.
No. 4 Pocahontas County also entertained No. 5 Petersburg on Wednesday evening.
For the girls, fifth-seed Philip Barbour defeated No. 4 Frankfort, 7-1, on Wednesday night and third-seed Pocahontas County blanked No. 6 Petersburg, 5-0.
Buckhannon-Upshur is the ninth seed in the Class AAAA, South Region and travels to No. 8 Parkersburg South this evening, while the sixth-seeded Lady Bucs are at No. 3 Hurricane on Saturday.
