Prep soccer regionals begin this week

ELKINS — High school soccer postseason play gets underway this week for area squads.

The Elkins boys are seeded third in the Class AAA, Region II tournament and will entertain No. 6 Keyser on Tuesday, with the victor traveling to No. 2 Robert C. Byrd on Saturday.

Bridgeport is the top seed in the tourney and awaits the winner between Tuesday’s match between No. 5 Lewis County at No. 4 Hampshire on Saturday.

Buckhannon-Upshur is the ninth seed in the Class AAAA, South Region and will visit No. 8 Parkersburg South on Thursday.

Woodrow Wilson is the top seed in the region and will host the B-U-Parkersburg South winner on Saturday.

In the 10-school Class AA-A, Region II tourney, Philip Barbour is the eighth seed and entertains No. 9 Lincoln this evening. The winner travels to top-seed Frankfort on Wednesday.

No. 4 Pocahontas County visits No. 5 Petersburg on Wednesday and seventh-seed Moorefield hosts No. 10 Berkeley Springs today.

For the girls, Elkins is the fourth seed in the Class AAA, Region II tournament and hosts Hampshire on Tuesday. The winner visits top-seed Bridgeport on Saturday.

B-U is the sixth seed in the Class AAAA, South regional and visits No. 3 Hurricane on Saturday.

In Class AA-A, Region II tourney, Philip Barbour is the fifth seed and ventures to No. 4 Frankfort on Wednesday. The winner travels to top-seed Lincoln on Saturday.

Pocahontas County is seeded third and entertains No. 6 Petersburg on Wednesday, while Moorefield is seventh and visits No. 2 Berkeley Springs on the same day.

Starting this season, sectional play has been eliminated, with larger regional tournaments now the format.

The state tournament will now include teams from AAAA, AAA and AA-A and takes place Nov. 5-8 in Beckley.
