Tigers halt long skid against Bucs; EHS girls fall, 3-0

ELKINS — The Elkins High School boys soccer team ended a long losing skid to Buckhannon-Upshur with a 2-0 victory Thursday evening at Tiger Stadium in Big 10 Conference action.
“Tonight’s game was about changing the narrative in our rivalry with Buckhannon,” Tigers coach Scott Cutright said. “It’s been 15 years since this program pulled out a win against B-U, and the boys were absolutely determined to end that streak.
“”The boys played with that determination from start to finish.”
Elkins scored a goal in each half, with Tristan Whited finding the back of the net in the opening half and Dyer Barger adding a key insurance goal in the second half.
“This was our last regular-season home game, and we knew we had to execute to get the result we needed,” Cutright added. “I’m really proud of the boys and happy for them to earn this much-needed win for the program.”
The Tigers (11-2-3) venture to Class AAA, Region II opponent Hampshire at 1 p.m. today.
In the preliminary girls match, Haley Triplett had two goals in the second half as Buckhannon-Upshur handed Elkins a 3-0 setback Thursday night in Big 10 Conference play at Tiger Stadium.
The Lady Bucs got on the board with 11:28 left in the first half when Rylen Carlyle scored from close range.
Carlyle and Ella Whitehair were credited with assists on the evening.
The Lady Tigers will travel to regional foe Hampshire at 11 a.m. today.
B-U entertains Grafton at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday for another league contest.
