Turnovers plague Tigers in setback to Huskies
RACHEL — Toby Michael accounted for three touchdowns and Class AAA, No. 8 North Marion took advantage of four turnovers by No. 10 Elkins in the first half en route to a 41-13 victory Friday night at Roy Michael Field.
Michael, who ran in for a pair of scores and threw for another, finished the contest with 154 yards rushing and 54 passing.
After forcing a Tiger punt on the opening possession of the contest, the Huskies marched 76 yards for the game’s first score when Michael raced in for an 11-yard touchdown.
Elkins answered just one play into the ensuing possession when Seth Robinson broke free for a 60-yard touchdown with 4:43 remaining in the opening quarter.
North Marion answered back to take a 14-7 lead when Michael ran into the end zone from 52 yards out with 3:43 left in the first frame.
Brian Poindexter gave the Huskies a 21-7 lead when he scored a 6-yard touchdown run on the opening play of the second quarter.
Despite the first-half miscues, the Tigers had a chance to cut into the lead just before the half, but fumble at the Husky 1-yard line with under two minutes to play stalled the scoring drive and pushed the momentum back in North’s favor.
A Cole Morris touchdown pass to Cyrus Collins with 31 seconds remaining in the half treated North Marion to a 28-7 lead.
Another Elkins turnover on its ensuing drive gave the ball back to the Huskies and Morris threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Blake Johnson as time expired in the first half and extend the lead to 34-7.
The Tigers cut the lead to 34-13 with 1:15 left in the third quarter when Robinson ran in for a 1-yard touchdown.
Michael connected with Collins for a 63-yard touchdown reception with 9:30 left in the fourth quarter to push the North Marion lead to 41-13.
Robinson led Elkins’ offense with 120 yards on the ground. Logan Beam followed with 102 yards rushing.
The Tigers are now 5-2 and will entertain Fairmont Senior next Friday.
The Huskies are also 5-2 on the campaign and will travel to Lewis County the same evening.
