WVU safety ruled out for season

MORGANTOWN — Another week, another West Virginia player out for the season.

Rich Rodriguez announced on his radio show that safety Jordan Walker is done for the season after he broke his arm. This is the sixth player out for the year, joining Nicco Marchiol, Tye Edwards, Jahiem White, Ashton Woods and Jaden Bray.

Walker played in four games this season, and Rodriguez said he was really showing improvement and getting into a rhythm. The UT-Chattanooga transfer had 13 tackles and one interception against UCF, returning it for 31 yards.

Walker wasn’t the only injury update. The quarterback room has been banged up all year, with Marchiol out for the year.

Rodriguez said quarterback Jaylen Henderson is a couple of weeks away from being fully healthy. He started in just one game against Utah and was subbed in at some point in the first three games.

Quarterback Khalil Wilkins, who started against BYU and played better than Scotty Fox against UCF, is still doubtful heading into this week. Rodriguez said last week he might be able to work his way into an emergency role against TCU, but he didn’t dress.

There was some positive quarterback news. Charlotte transfer Max Brown wasn’t 100% against TCU, but dressed, and now, Rodriguez said he should be fully healthy. Brown’s been injured for most of the year, and played for a blink against Utah. He tried to hurdle someone and injured himself again. Without Wilkins, Brown should be Fox’s backup.

With all the injuries to the quarterback, Rodriguez talked about how he didn’t run Fox as much because there’s not a lot of depth behind him. This actually helped a little because it allowed Fox to sling it a lot more, and he threw for 301 yards, the most of any WVU quarterback this season.

Right tackle Malik Agbo suffered a high ankle sprain against TCU. He’s doubtful for Houston. Starting right tackle, who Agbo was filling in for, Ty’Kieast Crawford should be healthy this week.

Highly anticipated pass rusher Jimmori Robinson didn’t record a snap against TCU. Robinson’s had issues since he arrived in Morgantown. He had problems with the NCAA, and getting up to speed took some time. He’s only recorded two tackles this season.

Rodriguez gave an update on why Robinson didn’t see action against the Horned Frogs.

“Last week wasn’t a great week for him, as far as preparation and stuff,” Rodriguez said. “Hopefully, this week, he’ll be totally in all our preparation, and he can have a bigger role Saturday.”

Defensive lineman Hammond Russell hasn’t played since hasn’t played since BYU and was ruled out against TCU. Russell was the glue of the defensive line, and fellow lineman Eddie Vesterinen said he’s missed playing alongside him.

“It’s been tough not to have him,” Vesterinen said. “I’m happy to see him come back soon.”

Starting at $3.92/week.
