Colts topple Cougars, 55-8

PHILIPPI — Landyn Carpenter rushed for 239 yards and three touchdowns as Class AA, No. 4 Philip Barbour cruised to a 55-8 win over No. 13 Lincoln Friday night in rainy conditions at George Byrer Field at Freedom Bank Park.

The Colts finished the regular season with an 8-2 mark and winners of six straight games. They will officially learn their postseason opponent, date and time today, with at least one home contest in the postseason.

Cam Bennett, out of the “Wildcat” formation, had TD runs of 14 and four to give Philip Barbour a 14-0 cushion with 7:30 left in the first half.

Bennett had 59 yards rushing before being injured late in the first half and not returning.

Carpenter later broke free for a 50-yard jolt and added a 6-yard scamper with 51 seconds left in the first half to treat the Colts to a 27-0 halftime lead.

Carpenter found the end zone for third time with 8:35 remaining in the third quarter to extend the lead to 34-0.

Robbie Jones added a 33-yard scoring pass to Malachi Poling and Tristen Price returned an interception 62 yards to make it 48-0 after three quarters.

Mason Jones had a TD run for the hosts in the fourth quarter and Jacob Bart a late touchdown for the Cougars.

AJ Bart completed 15 of 34 passes for Lincoln for 119 yards.

His favorite target was Cade Riley with nine receptions for 80 yards, while Conner Rice had 65 yards on the ground.

Robbie Jones was 3 for 4 through the air for 92 yards for Philip Barbour.

The Colts had three interceptions on defense, freshman Ayden Thorne was a perfect 7 for 7 on conversion kicks.

The Cougars are now 4-6 and will learn their playoff fate today.
