Lady Tigers place first in Mohawk invite
MORGANTOWN — The two-time defending state champion Elkins High girls claimed the competitive Mohawk Invitational held Saturday at Mylan Park Aquatic Center.
The Lady Tigers racked up 216 points to outdistance the field of 15 teams.
South Fayette (180), Linsly (175.5), Washington (128) and Fairmont Senior (108) rounded out the top five.
Lilly Irons and Lilly Anger won individual events and were part of two first-place relay squads.
Irons turned in a time of 25.92 to capture the 50-yard freestyle, while Anger swam to first in the 100 freestyle with an effort of 58.61.
The juniors joined Aleah Irons and Emma Ujvagi in winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:57.61 and the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.54.
Aleah Irons was second in the 100 butterfly (1:05.77), Anger second in the 50 freestyle (26.23), Ujvagi fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.76) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:25.58), Sophia Rhodes fifth in the 100 freestyle (1:00.35) and Lilly Irons fifth in the 500 freestyle (6:12.73).
The EHS boys posted a ninth-place showing with 68 points.
Morgantown won the meet with 212 points, followed by John Marshall (137), Musselman (120), Fairmont Senior (119) and Robert C. Byrd (106) to comprise the top five.
The boys event included 16 teams.
Joel Casto placed second in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:07.49 for the Tigers, while Kyan George was fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.15) and the 200 freestyle unit of Casto, Briar Higgins, Koton Ward and George was sixth (1:44.67) and the 200 medley relay of Jackson Shepherd, Casto, George and Ward finished sixth (1:58.79).
Elkins, which was was second to Morgantown in combined team scores, returns to the pool at 6:30 p.m. today at home against Big 10 Conference foes Buckhannon-Upshur and East Fairmont.
