Troy wide receiver D.J. Epps also commits to Mountaineers
MORGANTOWN — Rich Rodriguez is starting to fill up West Virginia’s wide receiver room.
Troy transfer wide receiver D.J. Epps has committed to the Mountaineers, which was first reported by Chris Anderson of 247Sports. Epps chose WVU over Big 12 foe Cincinnati, who he planned to visit.
Epps spent three seasons with the Trojans.
He redshirted his freshman year, then only played six snaps in his second year at slot receiver, and then secured his first catch his sophomore year.
Epps had a bigger year last year and had 47 catches for 512 yards and five touchdowns.
He also had a big role on special teams, returning 24 kicks for 544 yards with a long of 79.
Epps was a 3-star transfer prospect and the 142nd-ranked receiver in the portal, according to 247Sports.
Epps is a smaller receiver at 6-foot-1 and has experience in the slot. WVU needed a slot receiver after long-time Mountaineer Rodney Gallagher announced he’d be entering the transfer portal on New Year’s Eve. Gallagher also handled some returns, so Epps will be a good addition for special teams coordinator Pat Kirkland.
This is the second receiver WVU has grabbed out of the portal.
A couple of days ago, Rodriguez signed USC and Boise State wide-out Prince Strachan.
The Mountaineers needed pass catchers after a lot entered the portal. Leading receiver Cam Vaughn entered the portal, alongside Gallagher, Justin Smith-Brown and Christian Hamilton.
WVU didn’t have any real production returning in the room for 2026.
This is Rodriguez’s seventh player added in the portal since it opened on Jan. 2.
