Lady Tigers win regional title; EHS boys runner-ups

WELLSBURG — The two-time defending state champion Elkins High School girls swim team captured the Division 2 North Regional title Saturday at Brooke High School, while the EHS boys were runner-ups.

The Lady Tigers racked up 169 points to outdistance runner-up Wheeling Central’s 96 points.

The remainder of the field included South Harrison (54), Robert C. Byrd (54), Weir (38), Philip Barbour (29), Doddridge County (26), Oak Glen (21), Lincoln (11), Hampshire (6), East Fairmont (6) and Grafton (3).

Elkins turned in a dominating performance, sweeping all three relay events and crowning regional champs in five of the eight individual races.

Aleah Irons, Emma Ujvagi, Lilly Irons and Lilly Anger captured the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:58.80, while Aleah Irons, Leah Ours, Sophia Rhodes and Ujvagi turned in a time of 1:45.14 to take the 200 freestyle relay and Lilly Irons, Ours, Rhodes and Anger won the 400 freestyle in a time of 3:54.88.

The Elkins High School boys finished as runner-ups in the Division 2 North Regional title Saturday at Brooke High School. The state meet takes places Feb 19-20 at Mylan Park Aquatic Center in Morgantown.

Winning individual titles were Lilly Irons in the 200 freestyle (2:08.33) and 100 freestyle (56.35), Ujvagi the 200 IM (2:21.71), Anger in the 500 freestyle (5:49.81), Aleah Irons in the 100 backstroke (1:04.77),

Placing second were Rhodes in the 200 freestyle (2:10.28) and 100 freestyle (58.75), Anger in the 50 freestyle (26.03), Aleah Irons the 100 butterfly (1:05.12) and Ujvagi in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.45),

Ours was third in the 50 freestyle (26.66) and Raighan Carte Hall third in the 500 freestyle (6:27.15),

Fourth-place finishers included Raighan Carte Hall in the 200 freestyle (2:23.11), Kenadi Carte the 200 IM (2:43.90) and 100 butterfly (1:12.97) and Ours in the 100 freestyle (59.77).

Philip Barbour’s Taylor McKinsey, Kendra Stalnaker, Rabekha Kennedy and Bridget McGee placed fourth in the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:28.37).

McKinsey also swam to fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:19.02).

The EHS boys tallied 110 points, 30.5 behind regional champion RCB.

Wheeling Central was third with 49 points, followed by Oak Glen (48), Grafton (47), South Harrison (35.5), Philip Barbour (26), East Fairmont (20), Doddridge County (13), Weir (11) and Hampshire (11).

The Tigers captured first in the 200 medley relay as the team of Dorsey Cutright, Joel Casto, Kyan George and Kolton Ward finished in a time of 1:54.38, while Briar Higgins, Cutright, Casto and George were second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.21) and Ward, Jackson Shepherd, Kyle Warner and Higgins were fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:25.26).

Casto captured first in both the 200 IM (2:15.58) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.97), while George captured the 100 backstroke (59.05).

George was also runner-up in the 50 freestyle (23.66), Cutright second in the 100 backstroke (1:03.79) and third in the 100 butterfly (1:04.78) and Ward fourth in the 500 freestyle (6:16.06).

Philip Barbour’s Isaiah Starks was the regional champion in both the 50 freestyle (23.15) and 100 freestyle (51.50).

The top four individual finishers and relays advance to the state meet, along with next fastest eight individual and four relay times across both the North and South regions.

The state meet takes place Feb. 19-20 at Mylan Park Aquatic Center in Morgantown.
