WVSSAC announces regional matchups for girls basketball

ELKINS — The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) revealed the regional pairings for high school girls basketball on Thursday.

Two teams from each region in Class AAA, AA and A advance to the state tourney, while four squad from each region in Class AAAA move on to Charleston.

In Class AAA, Region II, Elkins is the fourth seed in the single-elimination tourney and will host No. 5 Bridgeport on Thursday, Feb. 26.

Sixth seed Robert C, Byrd visits No. 3 Hampshire on the same evening.

The Bridgeport-EHS victor will travel to top-seed Keyser on Tuesday, March 3, and the RCB-Hampshire winner visits No. 2 Lewis County, with the winners of those game advancing to the state tournament.

The Lady Tigers are slated to visit Greenbrier East this evening and conclude the regular season Monday at Keyser.

Buckhannon-Upshur is the 10th seed in the Class AAAA, South Region and will travel to No, 7 Hurricane on Friday, Feb. 27, with the winner traveling to No. 2 Parkersburg South on Wednesday, March 4.

No. 9 Oak Hill visits No. 8 Riverside on Feb. 27 and the victor will visit top-seed George Washington on March 4.

No. 5 Cabell Midland ventures to No. 4 Huntington and No. 3 Parkersburg hosts No. 6 Woodrow Wilson in the other contests on March 4.

The four winners of the March 4 tilts earn state berths.

Philip Barbour, which hosted Moorefield on Thursday night, is the second seed in the Class AA, Region II tourney and hosts No. 7 Berkeley Springs on Friday, Feb. 27.

Also on Feb. 27, No. 3 Petersburg hosts No. 6 Braxton County, No. 8 South Harrison visits top-seed Lincoln and No. 4 Moorefield entertains No. 5 Frankfort.

On Thursday, March 5, the Berkeley Springs-PB winner faces the Braxton County-Petersburg victor and the South Harrison-Lincoln winner faces the Frankfort-Moorefield victor at the site of the highest-remaining seed.

The winners of the those games move on to state action.

In the Class A, Region II tournament, Tucker County, which hosted Petersburg on Thursday evening, is the top seed and hosts the winner between the Thursday, Feb. 26 contest between No. 5 Paw Paw and No. 4 Pendleton County on Wednesday, March 4, for a berth to Charleston.

Also on Feb. 26, No. 3 Tygarts Valley entertains No. 6 East Hardy and No. 7 Union travels to No. 2 Pocahontas County.

The winners of those games battle on March 4 for the other state berth from the region.

Tygarts Valley is slated to visit Pendleton County this evening and finish the regular season with a home game against Paw Paw on Saturday and trips to Notre Dame and Richwood.

The state tourney will be held March 10-14 at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.

The regional pairings for the boys will be announced by the WVSSAC next week.
