Tigers rally for win over No. 10 Knights

INSTITUTE — Elkins overcame a 14-point first half deficit to knock off Class AAAA, No. 10 Cabell Midland, 65-61, Thursday night in a game played at West Virginia State.

The Tigers trailed 20-8 after one quarter and by as many as 14 in the second quarter.

But a deep trey by Isaiah Nutter just as time expired in the first half cut the lead to 33-25 at halftime and gave Elkins momentum going into the final two quarters.

Nutter finished with 12 points.

Landon Shreve bucketed 11 of his team-high 22 points in the third quarter as the Knights’ lead shrunk to 49-47 after three quarters.

The Tigers then took a 53-52 lead on back-to-back baskets by Shreve, and outscored Cabell Midland 12-9 to end the contest.

“Down 20-8 after the first quarter with turnovers and we could have folded right then,” EHS coach Amrit Rayfield said. “But the kids hung in there and it was definitely good to see them earn a win like that.”

Dreyton Boggs added 16 points for the Tigers. Shreve also had nine rebounds, Amari Lonon four assists and Nutter three helpers.

The Knights were led by Marshall Summers with 23 points. Samuel Phillips chipped in 14.

Elkins will travel to Hampshire at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
