Evans hits late jumper as D&E edges Point Park in MEC tourney
WHEELING — Vegas Evans’ jumper with 27 seconds left to play lifted eighth-seed Davis & Elkins College to a 75-73 win over ninth-seed Point Park Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference first-round play at WesBanco Arena.
The Senators advance to face top-seed West Liberty at 6 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals.
Dontrell Jenkins led D&E with 19 points on the night, followed by Matthew Gray with 17 points, Evans with 12 and Nnadozie Okoroji with 11.
Malachi Hampton added 13 rebounds and Gray had seven caroms. Jenkins had a team-high four assists.
The Senators trailed 37-36 at the halftime break.
Aidan Anderson led the Pioneers with 27 points and 12 rebounds in the setback. Jaylen Stewart chipped in 10 points.
In Wednesday’s other first-round game, seventh-seed Frostburg State got past No. 10 West Virginia State, 93-85, and will face No. 2 Fairmont State at noon on Friday.
Other quarterfinal matchups include No. 3 Wheeling vs. No. 6 Concord at 2:30 p.m. and No. 4 Charleston vs. No. 5 Glenville State at 8:30 p.m.
