Tucker girls headed to states for 22nd consecutive season
Pocahontas secures berth by besting TV
HAMBLETON — Top-seed Tucker County secured its 22nd straight appearance in the state tournament with a 70-25 win over Pendleton County Wednesday night in a Class A, Region II co-final.
In the other co-final, second-seed Pocahontas County (16-2) defeated visting No. 3 Tygarts Valley, 74-50, to also earn a spot in Charleston.
The Lady Mountain Lions raced out to a 41-17 lead at halftime after holding a 19-8 advantage after the opening quarter.
The lead grew to 53-18 after three quarters as the Tucker County defense limited the Lady Wildcats to just one point in the canto.
Mayah Gross led all scorers with 18 points for the Lady Mountain Lions, who had four players reach double figures.
Addi Moats and Izzy Kitzmiller added 12 each, with MaKenna Evans bucketing 10.
Pendleton County, which ended the season with a 10-12 record.
Tucker County (17-5) is the fourth seed in the state tournament and will face fifth-seed Ritchie County (15-7) at 9 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals inside the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
Ritchie County advanced with a 65-47 win over Parkersburg Catholic on Wednesday night.
Pocahontas County, meanwhile, is the sixth seed and faces No. 3 St. Marys (20-4) at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
The Lady Warriors built a 34-12 lead after the first quarter in coasting to the win over the Lady Bulldogs, who ended the season with a 12-7 mark.
Senior Sarah Defibaugh had 18 points and Nevaeh Cooper 11 for Tygarts Valley.
Senior Kailen Yokum added nine.
Calli Propst led Pocahontas County with 26 points, followed by Savana Sharp with 19, Allyson Taylor 11 and Shayla Bennett 10.
The other Class A quarterfinal matchups on Tuesday include No. 2 Tug Valley (19-4) vs. No. 7 Greater Beckley Christian (16-7) at 1 p.m. and top-seed Gilmer County (22-2) vs. No. 8 Webster County (12-11) at 5:30 p.m.
The Class AAAA state tournament quarterfinal pairings are No. 3 Morgantown vs. No. 6 Cabell Midland at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, No. 2 Parkersburg vs. No. 7 University at 1 p.m., No. 1 George Washington vs. No. 8 Washington at 5:30 p.m. and No. 4 Martinsburg vs. No. 5 Parkersburg South at 9 p.m.
The semifinals will be held on Friday, March 13 and championship contest at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 14.
In Class AA, Philip Barbour hosts Petersburg this evening in a Region II co-final.
