Tigers best Huskies in home opener

Bucs, Colts, Bulldogs and Wildcats all garner victories

ELKINS — Elkins opened the home season with an 8-5 win over North Marion Tuesday in Big 10 Conference play at EHS Field.

The Tigers, who played their home games at Robin Harvey Memorial Field last season due to wind damage to the visiting team’s dugout at EHS, used three RBIs from Will Kilgore in Tuesday’s victory.

Isaac Shepler added two RBIs on a pair of hits and Dyer Barger had two hits.

Owen Stanley allowed three runs on three hits in going the first five innings to earn the win. He fanned four.

Shepler and Barger also saw time on the mound.

With runners on base in the seventh, Barger fanned the lone batter he faced to earn the save.

Bryce Nehls took the loss for the Huskies, surrendering five runs on six hits and striking out three over 2 2/3 innings.

Collin Verbosky had two RBIs for North Marion.

Elkins jumped out to a 3-1 lead before tacking on two runs in the third.

The Tigers added three runs in the fifth to build an 8-3 cushion.

The Huskies scored single runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings.

The Tigers are now 2-2 and slated to host Philip Barbour on Thursday.

B-U 13, Lewis County 1

TENNERTON — Jaxon Spratt had two homers and drove in six to power Buckhannon-Upshur to a 13-1 win over Lewis County Tuesday and William E. Phillips Memorial Field.

Spratt, who also a double on the night, had a three-run homer as part of a seven-run first inning for the Bucs.

Jerin Westfall went three innings to earn the win, allowing one run on one hit and striking out seven.

Westfall helped his cause with three RBIs on a pair of hits.

Luke Clem was tagged with the loss.

Konnor Jones had an RBI for the Minutemen.

B-U (3-1) will visit Fairmont Senior this evening.

PB 5, Grafton 3

PHILIPPI — Kale Wolfe fanned 10 batters to lead Philip Barbour to a 5-3 win over Grafton Tuesday in Big 10 play.

Wolfe went the distance, giving up three runs on five hits.

Robbie Jones and Parker Fincham had two RBIs each for the Colts, who are now 4-1 and slated to entertain Independence at 4 p.m. today for a doubleheader.

TV 18, Richwood 4

RICHWOOD — Austin Gear and Preston Smith collected four RBIs each as Tygarts Valley claimed an 18-4 win over Richwood on Tuesday.

Zayden Defibaugh earned the win on the hill, allowing four unearned runs on just two hits in 1 2/3 innings. He fanned three.

Caleb Teter worked hitless innings of relief, striking out two.

Jacob Wamsley added three RBIs for the Bulldogs, who are now 5-3 and will host Bath County (Va.) today.

Petersburg 14, Tucker 2

PETERSBURG — Petersburg scored nine runs over the first two innings in taking a 14-2 win over Tucker County on Tuesday.

Peyton Metheny and Owen Reel had two hits apiece for the Vikings.

Josh Crossland had an RBI single and Brock Hovatter two hits for the Mountain Lions.

Lukas Wolford went 4 2/3 innings to earn the win, striking out seven and giving up two runs on six hits.

Tucker County (0-4) is slated to visit East Hardy this evening.

Pendleton 16

Pocahontas 1

DUNMORE — Pendleton County used a 17-hit attack en route to a 16-1 win over Pocahontas County Tuesday in PVC action.

Travis Owens was 3 for 4 with five RBIs and Jaxon Simon was 4 for 5 for the Wildcats.

Logan Keatley had two hits and Keagan Calhoun an RBI for the Warriors.

Mason Miller went all five innings, striking out 13 to earn the win.
