Bulldog golfers fourth after first day of state tourney

WHEELING — Tygarts Valley sets at fourth place after the first day of the Class A portion of the state tournament completed Wednesday at Oglebay Park Golf Course. The Bulldogs carded a team-total 272, 59-over par on Wednesday. Wirt County (249, +36) is the leader, followed by St. Marys (254, +41), Charleston Catholic (270, +57), Tygarts Valley, Pendleton County (280, +67), Gilmer County (281, +68), Greater Beckley Christian (294, +81) and Summit Christian Academy (300, +87). TV cruises past Petersburg in middle school action

PETERSBURG — Leyland Martin rushed for 172 yards and three scores to lead Tygarts Valley to a 50-8 win over Petersburg last week in middle school football action. Creed Norman added 97 yards rushing and one touchdown for the Bulldogs, while Max Bender found the end zone twice and finished with 77 yards on the ground. Jordan Phares had a 63-yard interception return for a touchdown for Tygarts Valley, which will return to action next Wednesday at Pendleton County.

WVU true freshman Sieg still learning 6 games into season

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia football’s offense just scored to start the fourth quarter, making it a touchdown game. Arizona moved the ball past midfield, and it was time to test the Mountaineers’ defensive discipline. True freshman Matt Sieg stood in the secondary. Quarterback Noah Fifita snapped the ball, he handed it off on a sweep, which was handed off again and pitched back to Fifita. Tigers roar to second in playoff ratings

ELKINS — After a thrilling second-half rally to upend North Marion this past Friday night, Elkins has climbed to second in the latest WVSSAC playoff ratings released on Tuesday. The Tigers (6-1) overcame a 24-7 halftime deficit at home to hand the then-No. 2 Huskies a 41-24 setback, jumping up three spots in the ratings. Elkins is idle this week and will visit Fairmont Senior on Oct. 23. Herbert Hoover tops the Class AA ratings, followed by the Tigers, North Marion, Bridgeport and Winfield to round out the top five. Alley looking to alternatives to fix WVU’s defense

MORGANTOWN — Arizona scored 52 points on West Virginia football’s defense. For the third straight week, defensive coordinator Zac Alley’s defense gave up 40-plus points and well over 400 yards of offense being the major reason for why the team lost. D&E harriers compete at Carnegie Mellon invite

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Davis & Elkins College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed against a large field of NCAA Division I, II and III programs at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational this past Saturday, with the men finishing seventh and the women placing 10th. Freshman Riccardo Andreatta led the men’s team with an eighth-place finish in the 8K, crossing the line in 24:56.3 among 234 runners.
