Busy night of action at Elkins Raceway

KERENS — Fans were treated to a little extra race action Friday evening at Elkins Raceway. The evening started with make-up features for the West Virginia Pools Street Stocks and the Edge Hot Mods. Anthony Arbogast grabbed the victory over Jason Ammons. Teresa Vaughan and Jamie Keene made it two ladies in the top five. Ryan Gum finished fifth. The Hot Mods took to the track next. Thomas Sigler took the win over Dylan Hankins. Michael Moreland finished third. Roland Bell and Randy Bise rounded out the top five. After the rounds of Hot Lap Qualifying for everyone, the Jenkins ...

Saturday night offered great racing

Saturday nights alright! The song says for fighting. It was all right for racing at Elkins Raceway this past weekend. With increased purses and laps, the stage was set for some great racing. First up were the Performance Chevrolet AMRA Modifieds. Fifteen cars were in the pits. Kyle Bond made the tow over from Parkersburg and took the victory. Jamie McCloud took second. Dave Defibaugh finished third. Veteran Phil Jefferies ran fourth. Kenny Rowback finally got some of the troubles behind him and had a good run finishing fifth. The old MudBus had a rare suspension failure and I ...

Time to get ready for hunting season

In my last column I stated that the hunting season for this area (greater Randolph County) will start on Sept. 8, with the opening of the statewide squirrel season. This is just a measly five weeks away. Chances are, when this day arrives, we could still be in the heat of the summer. The leaves will be heavy, which will make the bushy-tails difficult to locate, and the biting and/or stinging insects will be prevailing. Now is the time for the bow hunters to be getting their archery skills tuned up. The best time of the day to be practicing would be in the early morning (7 to 9 ...

Saturday night card set at Elkins Raceway

There was yet another wonderful “Thunder in the Mountains” race event last Friday evening at Elkins Raceway. Threatening weather in the forecast caused car counts to be down somewhat but the competition was still hot. There’s a lot to cover in this column. I’m going to get right to the rundowns. First up, the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models had a small field and Michael Lake was able to take the win over Elkins’ own D.J. Miller. Bob Gordon finished third and it should be noted that fourth-place finisher Logan Hitt really put the pressure on Lake in the early laps, ...

Big weekend slated at Elkins Raceway

After a morning of rain and threatening skies in the afternoon and evening, it turned out to be a great night for racing at Elkins Raceway last Friday. There were several new cars in the pits to get a jump on the competition for this week’s doubleheader action. Speaking of which, don’t miss a lap of the action at our raceway this weekend. On Friday night the Red Frederick Memorial Race will kick things off with increased purses and laps in all divisions. The main event will be a 52-lap shootout for $5,200 to the winner of the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models. There will ...

Several changes made in hunting seasons

The 2018-2019 West Virginia Hunting and Trapping Regulations Summary can now be brought up online, and the hunting regulations booklet should be available in the Elkins Area in about 10 days. This year, there are more changes in the hunting regulations than what I normally see in any one year. Sunday hunting will be legal on public lands throughout the state. This means it will be lawful to hunt on Sunday in West Virginia on federal lands where hunting is permitted, in a state forest and state land owned or leased by the state for wildlife management purposes. Here is something I ...
