Elkins Raceway finale set for Sept. 29

First of all, there will be no racing this weekend at Elkins Raceway. There has been an announcement that the final race of the 2018 season will be Saturday, Sept. 29. The season-ending Festival 40 Race will feature the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models running for $2,000 to win. The Budweiser FasTrack Crate Late Models will pay $1,200 to win and there will be increased purses in all the divisions. Special note, gates will open at 5 p.m. and races will start at 7 p.m. This is an hour earlier than usual. Admission will remain $15, with kids under 12 with a paying adult free. Make plans ...

Take a youngster out for a day of hunting

The one-day statewide youth squirrel season is today. The nation's youth are simply the future of all sport hunting nationwide. There are several people who are eager to say that sport hunting is a dying sport. From the latest figures that I've observed, for every 100 adult hunters, there are only 70 children (under 15) who are learning about this sport or outdoor activity. This is a situation that needs to be reversed or sport hunting could be close to being a dead outdoor activity by the year 2050. Just about all children like to do whatever the adults in their lives enjoy doing. ...

Regular-season finale is Saturday at Raceway

KERENS — Once again Mother Nature played havoc with the racing at Elkins Raceway last Friday night. Hot laps were run and the first heat had taken to the track before the rains came. Officials attempted to wait out the rain but it just came back stronger and the event was washed out. Arm bands will be honored on Saturday evening for the final night of the regular season. There will be double points in all the classes and gates will open at 6 pm. Load up your friends and family and catch some great dirt track racing before the engines shut down for the year! There may still ...

‘Road trip’ a chance to see some old friends

One of the great joys of working in sports for myself is the start of fall practices for area high school and college teams. It begins a journey for the squads, as new faces are greeted by high expectations and everyone is optimistic about a successful season. While traveling around the area the last couple of weeks collecting information and pictures for the Gridiron Guide, which will appear in Thursday’s editions of The Inter-Mountain, I had the opportunity to visit with several coaches, players and some familiar faces, including Tucker County coaching icon Tom Gutshall, who was ...

Mast surveys are important

Each year in August, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources would like to get at least four mast surveys from every county in the state. I got my mast survey forms from the DNR on July 31, and so far I have not yet been in the woods. This past Sunday I went to the Izaak Walton League Summer picnic out on Files Creek and observed a few of the nut trees near the picnic pavilion. Most of these looked favorable. I wanted to go up on the hill behind the club house after I finished eating, but the humidity was just too intense. The only thing I wanted to do was find a ...
