Squirrel season is upon us

The statewide squirrel season opened this past Saturday. I have only talked to two hunters who have been in the woods for this year. The first hunter told me that where he took his grandkids, there was plenty of hickory nuts, beech nuts and acorns, but no squirrels. They hunted all morning and did not see any bushy-tails. The other hunter was able to get two gray squirrels with a .22 rimfire rifle in Barbour County. Leaves are beginning to change. Hurricanes have played havoc in Texas and Florida. Racing action is swinging into high gear as NASCAR begins the playoffs to determine the 2017 National Champions in its three top divisions. Holiday racing roared all weekend

Labor Day weekend is always a busy race weekend! This year was no exception. There was great NASCAR action at two different venues. The largest regional dirt track event and one of the biggest in the nation was held at Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne Sunday evening. The Hillbilly 100 for the Super Late Model division was a super event. Forty-six cars entered for a shot at the 27-car starting field and the $25,000 first-place prize. The original .30 Winchester Center Fire (WCF) was introduced to the public in 1895. At that time, it was viewed as an outstanding deer cartridge. The first loading was a 160-grain bullet advertised at 1,900 feet per second (fps).
