Racing season ends with a roar The 2017 local racing season has drawn to a close with the final night of racing last Saturday evening with the Fall Brawl 40. Rain had been the story of the year and Mother Nature would be the track champion with multiple wins. There were only nine regular season races but this was one of the most competitive seasons. Throughout West Virginia, “No Hunting” and “No Trespassing” signs are a common sight. New land uses sometimes encourage this, like small tracts being used for second homes. Larger tracts of acreage can be leased out to elite hunting clubs. Open land is more prevalent today than farmland. The number of individual farmers in this state has been on the decline for several decades. Busch dazzled at Bristol

This week’s column has to go back to last Wednesday, Aug. 16, for the UNOH Camping World Truck series night race at Bristol, Tennessee. Kyle Busch was the story of the night. Even a pit road penalty couldn’t stop him from taking all stages and the win in his KBM Tundra. He put on a clinic, passing trucks high and low and beating the veteran Matt Crafton for the win. We are still in the midst of summer, but the kiddos are now back in school. Hopefully, the weather will soon cool down, and they will soon be going to dances, football games, and all sorts of other school and social activities. When I was their age, I had life made and didn’t know it. Last weekend, I was talking to one of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources police officers. Rain held off for race day

The weather held off Friday night and we finally got another race in at Elkins Raceway. The threatening skies kept the crowd and car count down. Those who took the chance saw some great racing. The Mini-Mods saw Chandi Currence grab another older group win over Dalton Goode. Ryan Hare had a strong third place run. Luke Hyre and Haley Mahoney rounded out the top five. George Casto III and Noah Whited battled it out for the younger group win. It has been a wild week of nosing around the gridiron for this reporter, and very enjoyable to say the least. My seven-day stretch of getting out and about started Aug. 5 at Wimer Field, doing a photo shoot in preparation for The Inter-Mountain’s upcoming football preview guide. Fittingly, Wimer is where my journey ended this past Saturday as the Elkins High School Tigers took on Liberty for a pre-season scrimmage.
