Memorial race was a great event

A picture-perfect day and evening brought out the fans and cars for the first annual Red Frederick Memorial event at Elkins Raceway on Saturday night. The Mini-Mods kicked of the night with Chandi Currence winning over Dalton Goode. Luke Hire finished third. Ryan Hare and Blake Runyon rounded out the top five. In the second group, Noah Whited defeated George Casto. There would be fireworks later in the skies but some of the very best drivers in the region brought out the fireworks on the track. Everyone came out to see the fast Jenkins Ford super late models battle it out for 52 ...

EHS shows class

ELKINS — A simple reporter’s pictures could have been gone forever Saturday, if not for hospitality and kindness of a local team. I left my camera behind by accident at Wimer Field. I was there to take pictures and interview players from many local teams, and a kid from Lewis County got there after the others had left. His coach called, and I turned around and went back to take pics and interview him like the others. It was a beautiful day at a truly historic venue where Elkins High School hosts its home gridiron affairs. In preparation for the annual local football preview ...

Memorial race set for Saturday

Oh my, it seems that Fridays are just rain magnets! This past week it was not only a rainout but flash-flooding that put Elkins Raceway under more than a foot of water in the pits and out to the main road. This week, the racing is moved to Saturday evening and once again we will try to get in the Red Frederick Memorial event. Great purses and a wonderful fireworks show are planned so if you have arm bands from the other rainouts bring them or just come purchase a ticket/pit pass and hopefully sit back and enjoy an evening of great dirt racing action. There should be a great car ...

Hunting those rascally rodents

Last week, I made a brief mention about doing some groundhog hunting for the first time in several years. Here is one way any hunter who hunts with a rifle can keep his shooting skills tuned up. Several years ago, I read an article in the Saturday Evening Post magazine titled, “Woodchuck, it’s war.” The farmers throughout Central Pennsylvania and Southern New York State were having all kinds of trouble with the woodchucks eating their vegetable gardens. Varmint hunters were being welcomed with “open arms.” Some people may not like groundhogs, but it’s the professional ...

Rain washes out racing

Rain is the story of the week for both Elkins Raceway and Tyler County Speedway. I’m not sure of the results from Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex because they don’t publish results. Ohio Valley was able to race Saturday night and, by looking at results, none of our local guys took the chance to tow over there. This weekend we will try to get in the double features for the WV Pools Street Stocks plus racing in all the other divisions on Friday evening. If the weather cooperates, that is — dreaded rain is in the forecast again. Mark your calendar! In two weeks on Saturday ...

State parks to offer four controlled deer hunts

This year, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is going to have four state park controlled deer hunts. These parks are Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park in Wood County, Pipestem Resort State Park in Summers County, Cacapon Resort State Park in Morgan County and North Bend State Park in Ritchie County. Multiple-day hunts are scheduled at Cacapon and North Bend State Parks for the first time. Such controlled hunts have been successful when it comes to deer management in past years. It is a well-proven fact, hunting is the most effective and efficient means of ...
