Race draws the biggest crowd in track history

The biggest weekend of Elkins Raceway racing for the year was planned for last Friday and Saturday nights along with the Wall of Fame induction ceremony planned for Saturday afternoon. On Friday afternoon, a crazy storm passed through the area and flooded the track and pit areas. The Red Frederick Memorial had to be postponed yet again. The make-up date for this big event will be announced a little later. On Saturday afternoon, the weather was beautiful and the 2017 class of inductees included Bolton Motors, George “Wimpy” Cutlip, Karl D’Anselmi, Deck Defibaugh, Glen Groves, ...

Teammates in the big game of life

On the battlefields of sports, teams are forged in many ways. Sometimes there is a playbook issued, but often it is simply seeing the field and doing your job that wins or loses a momentary skirmish. The same old military cliches pop up again and again when observing and also participating in teamwork at all stages of life. I am thankful I have never had to depend on the greatest of comrades in a live gunfight during times of conflict. Hats off to every veteran alive, and especially to those who gave all. The closest thing to an explosion you will hear on the courts of play will come ...

Dirt racing spectacular set for this weekend

Rain, rain, go away and, for that matter, stay away from Elkins Raceway! This weekend will feature the largest local racing event of the year. This will be a two-day show. On Friday evening, the first annual Red Frederick Memorial Race will take place, featuring increased purses in all divisions. The Jenkins Ford Super Late Models will run 52 laps for $5,200, plus lap leader money of $100 per lap. Then on Saturday, come on out early and meet the legends of Elkins Raceway as the 2017 Wall of Fame induction ceremony takes place. There will be opportunities for autographs and lots ...

EHS in need of an A.D., ASAP!

At Tuesday’s Randolph County Board of Education meeting, we all learned that Elkins High School is still without an athletic director — just weeks away from the start of football practice. During the public comment session of the BOE meeting, concerned parent Lisa Severino asked the board to look into the need for a new athletic director at Elkins High. Severino, who has worked on the EHS Baseball Facility Improvement Project since 2013, said the position is critical for all student athletes as well as the school and community. She said it was her understanding that the position ...

Hunting seasons to feature changes

The 2017-2018 Hunting and Trapping Regulations are now available online at www.wvdnr.gov. The regulations booklet should soon be available at the Elkins Operations Center and any place that sells hunting licenses. For all practical purposes, they are about the same as last year, with only one major change that I could see so far. Sunday hunting will be legal in all 55 counties on private land only, with the change going into effect this Sunday. Hunters, however, must have in their possession the written permission from the landowner to be able to hunt on such land on Sundays. The ...

Last tune-up before a big doubleheader

The Red Frederick Memorial looked like it was going to be an event to remember Friday night. Fans were backing up to get in the gate and even with the threat of rain the hill was filling up fast. The pits fewatured some of the finest race cars this region has to offer. And then it began, a little shower at first and some sunshine. Then it rained pretty steady for a while and once again it stopped and appeared that we may just be able to dry the track and get a late start but get it in. Then the bottom fell out of the clouds and Mother Nature decided it was time to go home. I ...
