Hints From Heloise

Try this K-Cup hack to save money Dear Heloise: Reusing K-Cups can help save money, but there’s a better way that doesn’t sacrifice flavor. Reusable or refillable K-Cups are widely available and designed specifically for single-serve machines. They have a small pop-top lid and can be filled with your favorite ground coffee. Buying coffee in bulk is far less expensive than purchasing prefilled disposable pods, even if you try to reuse them. Plus, you can control the strength of your brew while reducing waste. It’s a win for your wallet and a win for the environment. Make the ...

Before his return to the Oscars, Yorgos Lanthimos finds a still moment in Athens

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Oscar-nominated filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos paused his filmmaking and promotion schedule this week to celebrate a quieter creative pursuit: photography. The 52-year-old Greek director on Friday inaugurated an exhibition of his photographs in his hometown of Athens, presenting images he has taken over the past five years — many captured while making his films, wandering through movie sets and nearby neighborhoods, or on trips back to Greece. The exhibition gathers 182 still photographs, in color and in black and white, from the filmmaker known for his ...

Stocks sink after oil prices surge; reports suggest a slowing US economy

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks were falling Friday after getting a whiff of a worst-case scenario for financial markets: a weakening economy combined with high inflation. The S&P 500 dropped 1% after a report showed U.S. employers cut more jobs last month than they created and after oil prices jumped to their highest level in nearly two years because of the Iran war. It’s a combination that investors hate because no one in the world has a good tool to fix both a weak economy and high inflation at the same time. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 541 points, or 1.1%, as of ...

Report: American employers unexpectedly cut a surprising 92,000 jobs in February

WASHINGTON (AP) — American employers unexpectedly cut 92,000 jobs last month, a sign that the labor market remains under strain. The unemployment rate blipped up to 4.4%. Hiring deteriorated from January, when companies, nonprofits and government agencies added a healthy 126,000 jobs, the Labor Department reported Friday. Economists had expected 60,000 new jobs in February. Revisions also cut 69,000 jobs from December and January payrolls. The surprisingly weak employment picture in February adds to the economic uncertainty over the war with Iran, which has caused oil prices to ...

Rules were never meant for them

There is a particular kind of intellectual dishonesty that masquerades as principle and the American left has perfected it. It goes by either “international law” or “norms.” These phrases are invoked with religious fervor whenever the U.S. or one of its allies takes action in the world. They are conveniently forgotten whenever the enemies of civilization act. Watch the pattern long enough and the conclusion becomes unavoidable. The left’s commitment to international law is not a commitment at all. It is a weapon — one aimed squarely at the U.S. Consider what is happening ...
