Mrs. Jessie Eleanor Koontz Shahan, 85, a resident of Belington, departed this life Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024, in the Tygart Valley Health & Rehabilitation Facility (Formerly the Good the Samaritan Society of Barbour County) at Belington. Death was following a period of declining health.
She was born Nov. 14, 1939, at Belington, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Warren Fredrick and Opal Fitzwater Koontz.
She was united in marriage to Vernon Sylvester Shahan, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by two children, Dale Robert Shahan and wife, Sandy, of Belington, and Bradley Shahan of Belington; one granddaughter, Stacey Nicole Kyle and husband, Anthony, of Belington; one great-grandson, Mason David Kyle; and her loving companion of 44 years, Sherman Pitzer of Belington.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a son, Leonard "Kooter" Shahan; and a brother, Thomas Koontz.
Jessie attended the schools of Barbour County. Throughout her working career, she had many jobs. She sold Avon, ran a convenience store on RT. 92, she worked at the first Dollar General in Elkins, owner and operator of Shahan Salvage near Belington, and, she was also formerly self-employed as a life insurance agent. She was a homemaker and when she was able, she loved to cook and bake. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Friends will be received from the Talbott Funeral Home, 56 N. Brandenburg Street in Belington, on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. and again on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour, at which time final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Pastor Foster Williams officiating.
Interment will then follow in the Lambert Chapel Cemetery near Belington.
