ELKINS — Today has been designated National Wear Red Day for Women’s Heart Health and the Randolph-Elkins Health Department encourages everyone to wear red today to raise awareness.
On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the community is invited to a “Love Your Heart” event at the Randolph County Senior Center. Free blood pressure checks, risk assessments for heart disease and preventative information will be provided along with a few other perks.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States, killing one person every 34 seconds.
Many think the signs of a heart attack are unmistakable but, for women especially, symptoms can be more subtle and often confusing. Rather than experience terrible chest pain, they are more likely to experience dizziness, nausea, pressure or tightness in the chest.
To lower risk of heart disease:
Quit smoking. Just one year after you quit, you’ll cut your risk of coronary heart disease by 50%.
Aim for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (such as brisk walking) or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity (such as jogging), or a combination of both, preferably spread throughout the week. It’s also good to include moderate- to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activity (such as resistance or weight training) at least twice a week.
Modify your family’s diet if needed. Check out healthy cooking tips and learn about smart substitutions, healthy snacking ideas and better prep methods.
Please join health department staff in supporting the women in your life by wearing red today and take a first step toward heart health on Valentine’s Day at the Randolph County Senior Center.
