City’s paving work done, DOH’s continues

ELKINS — Other than the work that is currently ongoing by the West Virginia Department of Highways on Harrison Avenue, paving has concluded on streets and alleys within Elkins’ city limits, officials said.

“It is done, we finished it up yesterday evening,” Shawn Akers, Elkins Street Department supervisor, told the Inter-Mountain on Wednesday. “Everything went as smoothly as possible and the only problem we had was with the weather, where we got rained out a couple of times and had to reschedule a couple of days.”

The only other milling and paving currently taking place in Elkins is between Scottie’s on Harrison Avenue and Crazy Harry’s in Crystal Springs. That work is being done by the DOH because Harrison Avenue is one of several streets inside Elkins city limits that is owned and maintained by the state.

The DOH paving work is being done overnight from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. With weather permitting, that work should be completed by the end of the week.

Southern West Virginia Paving was in charge of the City of Elkins’ milling and paving of streets and alleys, which began on May 6. City of Elkins Street Department employees handled traffic control for the work that took place in all five city wards.

“We’ve worked with West Virginia Paving the last few years and they do an excellent job of doing what they do,” Akers said. “That paving crew is top notch. It was just another day at the office for them.”

Eighty loads of blacktop were put down throughout the city, as South Davis Avenue, Riverview Drive, 13th Street, South Henry Avenue, Bridgewater Drive, Riverbend Drive, West Davis Street, South Earle Street, Chestnut Street, Wilson Street, Central Street, Woodford Drive, Fields Lane, Bruce Street, Fist Street, Fifth Street, the alley behind the YMCA, and the t-shaped alley bounded by Boundary Avenue, Earle Street, Elm Street and Guy Street all received face lifts.

“We had a bigger paving budget this year so we put down more (pavement) than we have in the past,” Akers said. “With the paving over with, we will continue to do general maintenance throughout the city. We will be grating some alleys, painting crosswalks, and doing other various things. The crosswalks alone take us a good two months to get done, and that’s if we have good weather.”

Starting at $3.92/week.
