County Commission approves funding requests
ELKINS — The Randolph County Commission unanimously approved a pair of funding requests and a maintenance proposal during its most recent meeting.
A funding request from 4-H Camp Pioneer was on the agenda, as Commissioners David Kesling, Cris Sile, and Chris See agreed to provide the facility with $60,000 in county funding to help with the construction of new restrooms.
“Those bathrooms up there look like something out of the 1920s,” Siler said. “So, this money will help with a nice renovation. I think it will make a big difference with what they are trying to do at the facility.”
The Commission will take $55,000 of the money for 4-H Camp Pioneer from the Community Development line item of the county budget, while $5,000 of the funds will come from the county’s hotel-motel tax fund.
“They (4-H) came to us last year about the bathrooms in the main hall of the facility,” said Commission President David Kesling. “They were having to use shower curtains in the stalls and things like that. Some of the feedback they were getting when they would have parties there or whatever was all positive, except when it came to the showers. Since we own this building we wanted to reinvest back into it.”
In other requests, the Beverly Heritage Center was seeking $25,000, which is a portion of the money the County Commission has budgeted for the center this year.
“We received a request from the Beverly Heritage Center and they are requesting the second half of the money we have budgeted for them from the hotel-motel tax,” Kesling said. “They asked for this way back in mid-fall, but the hotel-motel hadn’t come through yet, so we held on to what we had until now.”
Also, a maintenance proposal was made by Kesling for Terra Floral Landscaping to provide summer, fall and winter maintenance on multiple grounds owned by the county, including the Randolph County Courthouse, the James F. Cain Annex, the Wees Annex, the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and the Randolph County Pool and Splash Pad.
“Terra Floral will come in during the spring and clean up, trim the trees, put down mulch, and remove debris,” Kesling said. “They will also provide the flowers that hang at all the facilities and the pool. And again, this is for the fall and winter as well.”
The Commission approved the proposal from Terra Floral for the work in the amount of $7,227.77.
The next Randolph County Commission meeting will be Feb. 20 in the Wees Annex at 1:30 p.m.
