Details emerging about death at Tucker ski resort

DAVIS — Authorities in Tucker County have provided details about an accident that claimed the life of a Timberline Mountain Resort guest last week.

On Jan. 4, Timberline announced on social media that a guest at the resort had passed away and that the cause of the death was still under investigation. No updates have been provided from the resort since.

Tucker County Ambulance Authority President Dennis Filler confirmed to The Inter-Mountain on Tuesday that the TCAA was called to the scene at Timberline, and emergency personnel attempted to save the guest.

“We responded to the scene at the ski slope and called in additional crews,” Filler said. “We are deeply saddened that we were unable to revive the individual. We threw everything we had at it.”

Filler confirmed that the victim was a male and was more than 60 years old. He also said the accident took place on one of Timberline’s ski lifts.

“I don’t know what’s going on (with the investigation), that’s a matter for outside of EMS,” Filler said. “I’m the President of the Ambulance Authority and we don’t do investigations.”

Neither the West Virginia State Police or Tucker County Sheriff’s Depart were called to the scene of the incident on Jan. 4, according to the Parsons Advocate. The newspaper said it spoke with both law enforcement agencies and both said they were not called to the scene.

Timberline issued a statement the day of the accident that read, “It is with profound sadness that we can confirm the death of a guest at Timberline Mountain on Sunday, January 4th. We want to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones affected by this devastating loss. The incident is currently under investigation and in consideration for the family’s privacy, we ask for your patience and understanding that we have no further details to share at this time.

“Our priority is always the safety and well-being of our guests. We would like to thank our ski patrol, mountain staff, and local emergency services for their swift and professional response. Our hearts go out to everyone affected, and we thank our community for their support in the wake of this tragedy.”

Timberline Mountain resort first opened in 1987. The resort closed in 2019 after filing for bankruptcy, but the resort was then sold and reopened in 2020.

Starting at $3.92/week.
