James Martin Phillips

PHILLIPS

James Martin Phillips, 53, of Fairmont, West Virginia, passed away on July 17, 2024, at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

He was born on Feb. 5, 1971, in Elkins, West Virginia, a son of the late James Homer Phillips and Ruby Alice Isenhart.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Dawn Phillips of Fairmont, West Virginia; his children, Adam Everson of Belington, West Virginia, Rachel Kelly of Morgantown, Hal Phillips, Erick Kelly and Jayme Phillips, all of Fairmont, West Virginia.

His life was further brightened by the joys brought by his grandchildren, Noah Everson, Kynsie Wheeler and Addy Wheeler.

He also leaves behind his caring siblings, Bertha ‘Gail’ Gonzalez of Waynesboro, Virginia, Ada Greene of Mt. Solon, Virginia, and Joyce Phillips of Roanoke, Virginia, who will all hold their brother’s memory close to their hearts.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Georgia “Alice” Phillips; stepfather, Leon Cecil Healey; and a brother, Frank Phillips.

A devoted Licensed Practical Nurse, James spent countless hours caring for patients at William R. Sharpe Hospital after his tenure at both Salem and Pruntytown State Correctional Facilities. His dedication extended beyond his professional medical life as he served as a substitute school teacher in Monongalia County, imparting wisdom, care, and sometimes, his trademark humor to his students.

A man of many interests, James was an enthusiastic gamer with a particular love of World of Warcraft. He found peace sitting outside by a fire.

Travel was in his soul, from spontaneous day trips with Dawn to immersive journeys across Europe–his wanderlust knew no boundaries. Nevertheless, his greatest joy was found in the laughter and company of his family, especially his cherished grandchildren.

Those who knew James recognized him as a man who liked to enjoy a gathering from the sidelines. He liked to watch the party unfold. He was sought out by many due to his infectious humor that made him a natural jokester.

Family and friends are invited to gather at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home, 10 S. High St. Morgantown, WV 26501, on Saturday, July 27, 2024, from 11 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 1 p.m.
