Jimmy Joe Copen, 72, a resident of Monterville, passed from this life Sunday, March 9, 2026, at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport with his wife and daughter by his side. He courageously battled leukemia and several other health issues for the past three years.
Jimmy was born Friday, January 29, 1954, in Marlinton, a son of the late James Thurman Copen and Nellie Bly Wilfong Copen.
On Dec. 27, 1975, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth “Beth” Ann Key, who survives at home.
Also left to cherish Jimmy’s memory are two children, Alicia Donald and husband, John, of Rootstown, Ohio, and Jesse James Copen of Monterville; grandchildren, Jesse, Jacob, John, Cameron, Emma, Barrett and Easton; and one sister, Linda Bickel and husband, Dave of, Huttonsville.
Preceding him in death besides his parents was one son, Jason Adam Copen; and six siblings, John Copen, Floyd Copen, Russell Wilfong, Louise Doyle, Hattie and Dovie Copen
Jimmy was a graduate of Pocahontas County High School. After moving to Ohio, he worked as a machinist for Akron Central Engraving for 23 years. Jimmy then returned to West Virginia with his wife Beth and children. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and woodworking. Above all family was everything to him; especially spending time with his grandchildren. Jimmy Joe will be missed greatly and be remembered fondly for always wanting to lend a helping hand and his gift of gab.
Visitation will be held Saturday, March 14, 2026, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m., the funeral hour.
Rev. Jon Tanner and Rev. Dave Bickel will officiate.
Jimmy’s request for cremation will then be honored.
