Should ATVs be allowed on city streets?

A copy of an email sent to all Elkins City Council members: With regards to the ATVs ordinance currently in front of city council. I want to oppose such ordinance whole-heartedly for several reasons and ask council several questions related to their thinking about and decisions concerning this ordinance. First, I would like to thank and support those council members who voted against this ordinance. Marilyn Cuonzo, Karen Wilmoth, David Parker, Judy Guye and Rob Chenoweth. Reasons: 1. Our city police do not sufficiently enforce our current laws on the books, with regards to ...

United Way kickoff auction a success

Thanks to the Randolph County community, the United Way of Randolph County has added $18,755 towards their $100,000 campaign goal with their annual campaign kickoff auction. We would like to extend a very special thank you to Roys RV, which has continued to be our lead sponsor for the campaign kickoff auction for many years. We would also like to thank each and every individual business sponsor for our successful event. Reader discusses COVID controversies

I am so glad that all those celebrities from Hollywood and our great leaders in Washington and across the nation took their vaccination with the press pushing cameras in their face. “See there folks; it didn’t hurt at all. If I can do it you can do it. Hurry and get your shot!” Cheap and childish publicity. I resent being talked to like a kid. Publicity stunt, right, Tom Hanks? The reason I’m bringing it up is I saw many celebrities who were not in the proper pecking order to receive the vaccine but they got it anyway. Someone had to invite them. As for spreading the ...

Healthcare leaders endorse vaccine

An open letter to West Virginians from WV Healthcare Leaders: We trust the COVID-19 vaccine West Virginia has experienced landmark days in the pandemic response this past week as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Emergency Use Authorization for a COVID-19 vaccine. As we write this, thousands of COVID-19 vaccine doses are being loaded and shipped to states across our nation, including ours. As healthcare and public health leaders in the Mountain State, we are breathing sighs of relief because we are confident that this vaccine is safe, effective, and is our best hope ...

Assistance program losing support

Our church recently learned Helping Hands in Elkins will be losing all assistance from the United Way in Elkins. This is a concern because Helping Hands is a small local assistance program that provides immediate assistance to those in need. Helping Hands does not replace other assistance programs but provides immediate, emergency relief. I remember how Helping Hands was formed – it was shortly after the 1985 flood. Due to the volume of requests for assistance, the churches and community leaders recognized the need to collect and coordinate requests to confirm the needs of ...

Meeting a true hero

Chuck Yeager was a personal hero of mine growing up and a big reason as to why I later joined the U.S Air Force and served my country for 20 years. I learned about him in school here in Elkins and how he was from West Virginia. I could not believe he was such a great person and that he was from West Virginia. He started out as a mechanic in the service and later became a test pilot where he achieved his fame, breaking the sound barrier and being a World War II ace and war hero. Later when I had joined the Air Force and I always was reading things about him and watching anything on ...
