Tigers’ Boland captures Big 10 title

RACHEL — Elkins High School’s Gavin Boland captured the Big 10 Conference title in the 106-pound weight class last weekend.
Boland defeated North Marion’s Noah Hess in the championship bout.
The league crown was another accomplishment for the sophomore. He his currently ranked third in the state with a 30-2 record, setting school records for most tournament wins in a season and winning percentage.
Boland, who has a career mark of 64-4, was runner-up at the 2021 state tournament.
Teammate Javier Rosario, meanwhile, lost in the 160-pound title match.
As a team, the Tigers tallied 67 point to finish eighth among the 13-team field.
Fairmont Senior won the league banner with 226.5 points, while Buckhannon-Upshur was second with 158 and Philip Barbour 10th with 40.
Big 10 champions for the Bucs were Liam Garcia (120) and Nathan Cornett (145). Aidan Wilson advanced to the 126-pound title match but was unable to participate due to an injury.
Regional tournament action is slated for Feb.18-19.
Elkins and Philip Barbour will compete in the Class AA-A Region II championship at Lewis County and B-U in the Class AAA Region 1 meet at John Marshall.
The top four finishers in each weight class at regionals advances to the state tournament which will be held March 3-5 in Huntington.
