EMS track teams place fifth in championships

CLARKSBURG — The Elkins Middle School girls and boys track teams both placed fifth in the Mid-Mountain Conference Championships held Saturday at Liberty High School.

The Lady Hornets received a first-place finish from the 4×800 relay unit comprised of Emilia Tenney, Delia White, Olivia DeWeese and Kaylee Stipes in a time of 11:57.49.

Earning second-place honors were the 4×400 relay (DeWeese, Ziah George, Tenney and Stipes) in a time of 4:58.15 and the 4×200 (George, Elizabeth Jones, Marissa Brenwalt and Molly Quint) in 2:04.26, along with Tenney in the 800 (2:47.62).

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Stipes, Raighan Hall-Carte, DeWeese and George placed third in 49.77 and Stipes tied for third in the high jump with an effort of 4-00.

For the EMS boys, the 4×800 relay comprised of Ben Tenney, Bobby Valentine, Jeffrey Ross and Preston Nixon placed first in a time of 10:32.42.

Nixon also finished second in the 3,200 with a time of 12:10.48 and Bobby Valentine was fourth with an effort of 12:17.58.

Randal Marks placed fourth in the 100 hurdles (19.94), while the 4×400 relay (Tenney, Elias Jones, Cody Robinson and Ross) finished second with a time of 4:26.88, the 4×200 (Tenney, Jones, Robinson, and Ross) was third in 1:57.59 and the 4×100 (Aaron Knight, Issac Workman, Cale Mabry and Robinson) was third with a time of 59.64.

Marks tied for fifth in the high jump with a leap of 4-10.

“Our athletes continue to amaze us each and every week, and this past Saturday was no exception” EMS head coach Debby Berdine said. “It was another cold and rainy day, but they all gave 110%. Our relay teams really shined, and it was exciting to see both 4×800 teams capture wins.

“We were especially impressed with the girls shuttle hurdle relay team, which was put together the week before the meet.”

The East Fairmont girls and Mountaineer (Clarksburg) boys won the team titles.

Elkins concludes the season in the Harry Green Invitational Saturday at Bridgeport High School.
