Streak continues for EHS boys

Tigers qualify for 10th straight state meet; EHS girls to send two

ELKINS — The Elkins boys ran to a second-place finish during Thursday afternoon’s Class AA, Region II championships held at Davis & Elkins College to keep their state meet streak intact.

The Tigers, who finished with a score of 38, advanced to the state meet for the 10th consecutive year and 18th in the last 21 seasons.

The young Elkins squad, with no seniors in the lineup, had four runners finish among the top 10.

Freshman Josh Bodkins was the first Tiger to cross the line in fourth place in a time of 20:33, followed by freshman Preston Nixon (6th, 20:55), junior Tyler Burda (7th, 20:58) and sophomore Gavin Brown (9th, 21:17).

Sophomore Johnathan Dean (12th, 21:57), freshman Aaron Knight (13th, 22:00) and sophomore Andres Masten (28th, 24:34) rounded out the EHS competitors.

Elkins senior Sammi Sproul enters the home stretch during the Class AA, Region II meet Thursday at Davis & Elkins College. Sproul placed fourth to earn a state berth.

Lewis County captured the title with a score of 30.

The Minutemen had the top three finishers in Slate Swiger (19:18), David Hughes (19:54) and Maddox Prince (20:09).

Liberty earned the other state berth with a score of 72.

Lincoln (90), Robert C. Byrd (138) and Roane County (154) rounded out the team scoring.

The Elkins girls didn’t qualify for states as a team but the lone senior Sammi Sproul (5th, 23:50) and freshman Delia White (9th, 24:31) earned individual berths.

Other Lady Tigers competing included freshman Raighan Hall Carte (13th, 25:56), sophomore Mallory Bennett (18th, 26:51), freshman Emma Gilbert (19th, 27:08), freshman Mya Mendelson (20th, 27:27) and freshman Taylor Lanham (24th, 29:10).

With only four full teams competing in the girls race, the region will only send two to states — Braxton County (39) and Liberty (53).

Elkins placed third with a score of 62 and RCB was fourth with 68.

Liberty’s Destiny Berryman won the individual title with an effort of 21:53.

The state meet takes place Oct. 29 at Cabell Midland High School in Ona.
