14 teams from around the state to compete for title

ELKINS — The Little League 10-12-year-old state tournament gets underway Saturday at Melvin Heckel Fields, located at Riverbend Park.

A total of 14 teams from around the state will compete for the title, with the winner advancing to the Southeast Region Tournament to be held July 31-Aug. 5 at Warner Robins, Georgia.

District 8 is the host for the tournament and will be represented by champion Belington-Barbour County and runner-up Summersville.

The teams are broken down into two divisions — Mountaineer and Herd.

Games will be held daily in the double-elimination tournament through July 16.

The winner and runner-up from each division moves on to the championship round set to begin on July 17.

The semifinals will be held on July 17 and the title game on July 18.

Competing in the Mountaineer Division will be Barboursville (District 1 champion), Hurricane (District 3 champion), Central Greenbrier (District 4 champion), Bridgeport (District 5 champion), Summersville (District 8 runner-up), Logan (District 2 runner-up) and Martinsburg (District 6 runner-up).

The Herd Division includes Chapmanville (District 2 champion), Jefferson (District 6 champion), Belington-Barbour County (District 8 champion), Huntington (District 1 runner-up), Winfield (District 3 runner-up), Shady Spring (District 4 runner-up) and Fringe (District 5 runner-up).

The teams arrive in Elkins today and will gather at Riverbend Park for meals and a manager meeting.

The meal will be served at 5:30 p.m. for team players, managers and coaches and will consist of chicken, hot dogs, beans, roll, chips, drinks and dessert.

A mandatory meeting for the managers begins at 6:15 p.m. in the large pavilion at Riverbend Park.

At approximately 7 p.m., a skills competition will take place, including a home run derby.

Admission is free for spectators attending the tournament.
