Lady Tigers win third straight swim title; EHS boys runner-ups

MORGANTOWN — The Elkins High School girls swam to their third straight state title Friday night at Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
The Lady Tigers captured the Division II crown, while the EHS boys were runner-ups.
This year’s event marked the first year that swimming was broken down by division. The Division 1 swimmers represent the state’s larger schools, the Division 2 swimmers, smaller schools.
The Elkins girls finished 126 points to hold off Herbert Hoover’s 121, while the Tigers finished second to champion and Big 10 Conference rival Robert C. Byrd, which tallied 119 points — 42 better than Elkins.
The Philip Barbour boys finished tied for eighth with 23 points, behind Isaiah Starks’ first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle on Thursday night.
The foursome of Aleah Irons, Leah Ours, Sophia Rhodes and Emma Ujvagi captured first in the 200 freestyle relay on Friday with a time of 1:44.30, and Lilly Irons, Ours, Rhodes and Lilly Anger state champs in a key 400 freestyle relay with an effort of 3:50.51, while Aleah Irons was second in the 100 backstroke, Anger was fifth in the 500 freestyle for the Lady Tigers, while
For the EHS boys on Friday, Kyan George was second, Dorsey Cutright third and Jackson Shepherd sixth in the 100 backstroke, Joel Casto second in the 100 breaststroke, Kolton Ward fifth in the 500 freestyle and Ward, Jackson, Kyle Warner and Briar Higgins sixth in the 400 freestyle relay.
Buckhannon-Upshur’s Aubry Shay was fifth in the 100 breaststroke in Division I action.
The George Washington boys and girls claimed the Division I titles.
