Fire at an Ohio farm complex kills about 6,000 hogs

LONDON, Ohio (AP) — A fire at an Ohio hog farm complex killed about 6,000 pigs and unleashed a large plume of smoke that could be seen for miles across the rural landscape, an official said. Multiple fire departments responded amid sustained winds of about 20 mph (32 kph) and gusts reaching up to 35 mph (56 kph), which accelerated the fire's spread, and because water supplies in the area were limited, extensive water shuttle operations were needed. Two of five large agricultural buildings were "heavily involved in fire," and it took five hours to bring it under control, Chief Brian ...

Third victim dies after ice rink attack

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A deadly shooting during a youth hockey game in Rhode Island last week has claimed a third victim, a grandfather whose daughter and grandson were also killed in the attack, authorities said. Gerald Dorgan, who had been in critical condition, has died from his injuries, Pawtucket police said. Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien said he was heartbroken that another person has died because of the shooting. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victim’s family, friends, and all those impacted by this tragic act of violence,” he said. Dorgan’s ...

Crowds of Chicago mourners pay respects to Jesse Jackson

CHICAGO (AP) — A line of mourners streamed through a Chicago auditorium Thursday to pay final respects to the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. as cross-country memorial services began in the city the late civil rights leader called home. The protege of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and two-time presidential candidate will lie in repose for two days at the headquarters of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition before events in Washington, D.C., and South Carolina, where he was born. Family members wiped away tears as the casket was brought into the stately brick building. Flowers lined the sidewalks ...

Judge rejects request to block White House from building its $400 million ballroom project

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday rejected a preservationist group’s request to block the Trump administration from continuing construction of a $400 million ballroom where it demolished the East Wing of the White House. U.S. District Judge Richard Leon ruled that the National Trust for Historic Preservation was unlikely to succeed on the merits of its bid to temporarily halt President Donald Trump’s project. He said the privately funded group based its challenge on a “ragtag group of theories” under the Administrative Procedure Act and the Constitution, and would ...

Trump’s report card

During his State of the Union, President Donald Trump declared himself wonderful. My new video takes a closer look, scoring his fifth year as president. He deserves an “A” for his willingness to take questions. It’s a relief after President Joe Biden, who hid from reporters. But Trump deserves an “F” for childish bragging. Ignorant, too. He proudly announced he cut drug prices by “400%, 500%, even 600%!” Didn’t he learn math? If he cut prices 100%, drugs would be free. Trump deserves an “A” for ending Biden’s self-destructive, anti-energy policies. On ...

Government subsidies killed EV industry

Here’s a depressing but all too predictable headline from The Wall Street Journal last week: “Detroit’s EV Pullback Is Costing $50 Billion.” Yikes. That’s a lot of money for the American auto industry to lose. Once again, we have confirmation of an iron law of economics: If you want to kill an industry, subsidize it. The best recent example of this rule is the green energy industry (solar and wind power), which has been heavily boosted with taxpayer dollars for almost 50 years now and is still an inconsequential form of overall energy supply. Dozens of promising firms ...
