BBQ Bash set to kick off Friday

STONEWALL RESORT — Some of America’s best BBQ teams are coming to the grounds of Stonewall Resort in Roanoke this weekend to compete in the fifth annual WV State BBQ Championship, sponsored by the Almost Heaven BBQ Bash, on Friday and Saturday.

An anticipated 50 teams and nearly 70 certified judges have registered from across the eastern U.S. with teams competing for over $10,000 in cash and prizes.

The WV Grand Champion will earn the top prize of $2,500 for preparing the best chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket.

The Grand Champion also earns a chance to compete in the Jack Daniels Worldwide Invitational BBQ Tournament, considered the “Super Bowl of BBQ” and the American Royal BBQ Championship in Kansas City.

The event also serves as the Mid-Atlantic BBQ Associations’ WV Cup, with additional prizes and recognition for the top ranking team from West Virginia. WV Backyard BBQ Teams will prepare chicken and ribs and compete for a separate cash and prize pool while preparing to move into the “pro” division. A sanctioned SCA Steak contest is also open Friday evening to individuals or groups with a $2,000 cash prize pool.

As proof of the quality of the BBQ teams competing in this year’s BBQ Bash, the 2017 WV Grand Champion, Walt Moulton and his Rocky Top Barbeque Team from Tennessee, also won the 2017 Jack Daniels Invitational Tournament last fall representing the BBQ Bash and West Virginia. Several teams have also won multiple grand championships at other BBQ competitions, but they’re coming to the BBQ Bash to try their hand for the grand prize.

Lots of great family activities are also planned with a Friday evening car cruise in, Cornhole Tournament on Saturday, inflatable games and activities for the kids, a WV Craft Beer and Wine Garden, live entertainment, unique crafters and vendors, chainsaw carving demos, and much more.
